Win tickets to the ATP finals

This is a landscape with the wow factor, where people are of minor significance and nature reigns supreme. Yesterday, I climbed to a 2,930ft summit — a national trail’s highest point. Thus, today, at the request of my feet, will be more for exploring by car.
Currently, 6½ miles southwest of the summit, I am searching for a Roman milestone. At 4½ ft tall, it is one of only two in Britain remaining in its original position. The Romans were well known hereabouts — as I am reminded two southeasterly miles later when I drive through a village built on the site of a Roman fort. A further five miles takes me to a former county town (its county some 780 square miles). There, I look around and soon stumble across the castle — dating from the 12th century, but much restored by a 17th-century countess. She gained a reputation for restoring such buildings (owning several) and is buried in the town church (its organ casing is one of Britain’s oldest).
I check my map. Five miles northeast, a spectacular valley; it would be a shame not to see it. I drive as close as I am able, pull on my walking boots (though my aching feet counsel against it) and set off. I do not walk to the 1,900ft-plus valley head (too far), but close enough to appreciate the eye-popping escarpments left after the U-shaped valley was scooped out by an enormous glacial hand. Later, feet throbbing, back at the car, I rejoin the main road and motor southeast until I reach a second town, eight miles from the first. Its ruined 12th-century castle, built on the site of a second Roman fort, was also restored by the countess. I do not stop, but continue southeast — for there is a remote building I wish to find a further eight miles away. It is, reputedly, the country’s highest inn — perched 1,732ft up in this awesome wilderness.
What will I do when I arrive? A drink would be nice (a highball apt, but I’m driving). Above all, I’d settle for something hot and steaming — in which to sink my throbbing feet.
The questions
1 What is the name of the summit?
2 Who was the countess?
