Jermain Defoe has agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur and will complete his £15million move from Portsmouth in time to be introduced to supporters before the Carling Cup semi-final against Burnley tonight.
The England striker, who moved to Portsmouth for £9 million a year ago, will complete his move subject to passing a medical today. Defoe is keen to return to North London and Tottenham are believed to have offered the 26-year-old a five-year contract.
"Personal terms have been agreed and the striker will undergo a medical," a Tottenham statement read.
The deal has to be ratified by the Premier League, which had to give their permission for the move which breaks their guidelines which prevent a player being transferred back to his original club within a year. However, those rules are to guard against sinister dealings.
As well as the transfer fee, Defoe increased his wages from £35,000 to £50,000-a-week when he moved to the South Coast and is likely to demand as much as a £10,000-a-week rise.
Any deal for Defoe would also have to take into account monies owed to Tottenham by Portsmouth for the transfers of Younes Kaboul and Pedro Mendes.
Defoe left Spurs for £9million and although the value of his return means they will be paying more, instalments from previous deals to take players to Fratton Park formed part of the discussions between Levy and Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie.
Defoe had also been a possible target for Aston Villa and Manchester City, but is now likely to return to the club where he spent four years before growing frustrated with life as a bit-part player while the partnership between Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov flourished.
The former West Ham United striker scored eight goals in his first seven games for Portsmouth last season and has scored nine this term.

Is 'Arry trying to bankrupt two clubs through flogging and re-flogging the same players? Now that would be a first.
This deal works out as Spurs having effectively paid Pompey the sum of six million to look after their best striker for a few months.
A nice little earner if ever there was one!
