A schoolboy was sentenced to life in prison today after kicking a man to death and then recording a video boasting that he had the “eyes of a killer”.
Police said they were shocked to discover the footage on a mobile phone belonging to Andrew Smith, who was 15 when he punched, kicked and stamped on Asaf Mahmood Ahmed in central Bolton.
Smith was sentenced to a minimum 13 years detention at Manchester Crown Court today while his accomplice Jason Bolton, 18, was ordered to spend at least 17 years in jail.
Mr Ahmed, 28, who had three children, was brutally attacked as he sat on the steps of a nightclub on December 21, 2007.
The boys initially targeted another man but he was too strong for them and escaped unhurt. Moments later they turned their attention to Mr Ahmed, who was 5ft 5ins and weighed seven stone.
The court heard Mr Ahmed died from an asthma attack as he lay in a pool of blood with his inhaler by his side.
The judge said Smith had left the scene after the attack, but Bolton returned and kicked Mr Ahmed’s inhaler out of his hand.
Mr Justice MacDuff, who passed sentence, told the court that the attacks were “callous, unprovoked and lacking in humanity” and that Smith took “pride” in filming himself after the killing.
“Both of you refuse to accept any real responsibility for, or understanding of, your wicked attack on Mr Ahmed,” he said. “You have no compassion - your only concern was to save your own necks.”
Dave Hickey, the Deputy Senior Investigating Officer, said officers were appalled when they watched the footage of Smith looming over the camera phone and bragging about his savage attack.
“It’s difficult to understand why someone would aggrandise what has happened,” he said.
“These sentences reflect the level of violence and the horror of the case and will go some way to appease the family and help them come to terms with what’s happened.”
Following the teenagers’ conviction last month the Ahmed family issued a statement saying they had been devastated by the attack.
They said: “Asaf was a quiet, private man who would not harm anyone. He was a good son, brother, husband and father to his three children.
“We are not a family without him: something is missing. We will miss him every day of our lives.”

that is not fair blaming the parents or all the other children im 16 and i've never done anything like this it isn't anyones fault but the murderers and i dont think he should get life in prison for what he did i think he shoud get the death sentence like all the other cold blooded killers out there
Maz, Derby, Britain
I spoke to a guy on the train yesterday who told me
"Jails not all that bad kid. Three straight meals, 5-a-side football after tea. Get on the playstation in the afternoon. It's an easy life for some. Thats why you've got crime."
I got the feeling he was speaking from experience. Some punishment.
Craig, Edinburgh,
There seems to be some confusion. This boy was given a life sentence. After 13 years he will be eligible to APPLY for parole. He may get it straight away. He may never get it. It depends whether at that time he is considered a danger to the public.
David , Stroud,
Can I suggest that we all start lobbying our MP's about the ridiculous sentences that are being dished out. It is an absolute disgrace that we allow murderers to serve these short sentences, life should mean life not a minimum of 13 years. This is no deterant and an offence to the victims.
Jane Ross, Surrrey, UK
How does a sentance of 13 years become a life sentence??? Or does it go against the human rights of this killer to actually keep him in jail till he dies? The same with the killers of Baby P, they will be free in less than 15 years but still the records will show they had a life sentence.
Anand, Reading, UK
How does one describe this kind of crime where there seems to be no motive other than desire to hurt someone? Could it be called "a recreational murder?" Even as recently as 10 years ago, I don't remember crimes like this being reported
Phil, Scarborough, Canada
The problem is marijuana. It has completely numbed a whole generation of Britons and this whole time people are blaming the class As. Marijuana has dulled the brains, induced schitzophernia and detatched an entire generation who are too stoned to realised they are hooked.
Alex, London,
I was attacked on halloween, but thankfully got off lightly
the goverment needs to put harsher sentences on these people
otherwise were just going to see more and more yob related deaths.
Kyle, Preston,
Again another life lost another family destroyed, the custodial system is not deterent when the do gooders go on about infringing their human rights. Jail is a punishment after all. We should have chain gangs with prisoners doing menial jobs by hand in all weathers. hard labour is punishment!!!!!
chris, Merthyr Tydfil , UK
there are plenty of good people out there that are good role models for young people, and many kids that grow up in bad homes dont turn into killers...it is not an excuse and like someone said prison should be somewhere to prevent them from doing it to some other poor undeserving soul.
delia brooks, colchester, United Kingdom
It is numbing to read of a youth stomping a father to death, then bragging on video and getting, as a result, 13 years detention with meals and medical and continued bragging. The callousness of the act, the cold pride in taking life, and a system that talks big while watching the problem escalate.
Carson, Leatherhead,
Spot on Elga, spot on. How saddening that this story is not at all surprising.
Carl, London,
Alan, what do you mean "Just put them away for good, regardless of the cost"? Do you genuinely think that's the best way to treat the problem? Incarceration without adequate rehabilitative measures aggravates the problem. What is needed is for the govt to stop re-offending and help the "underclass".
Dónal, Cambridge, England
When children do not act like children and commit heinous crimes, the justice system should see them as criminals and not as misguided youth. The sense of being a human is same for everybody and when an action is committed that lacks this sense, then it is just pure evil.
Manu, Chennai, India
Time to bring back capital punishment ?
Stuart, Sutton Coldfield, UK
The sentence is appallingly light. I cannot fathom a society that might expose itself to this person a mere 13 years from now. It is unwise from an incapacitation standpoint and insufficient from retributative standpoint. More than this, it is also an insult to the memory of the victim.
John D., Los Angeles, California
There may be exceptions and I may be wrong, but I think that these youths' punishment began when they were born into loveless homes, and in the further course of their young lives there was nobody who cared enough to show them that there are alternatives to bad behaviour and finally crime.
Elga, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany
he doesn't say 'eyes of a killer'.he says' i is a killer',yob speak,ali -g etc
chris s , montagu, rsa
We now have an underclass of people who have never worked or valued anything in their lives.Violence is common both in the home and on the streets and recent dreadful news story's reflect this situation.Just put them away for good, regardless of the cost
Alan, Leatherhead, UK
life should mean life no matter of age or skin colour.
at last a judge gives a sentance to a crime that deserves prison well done that man.
my thoughts go out to the family of the victim there is at least some justice for there loss.
william, leeds, united kingdom
He's 18- he's getting 13 years, so he's 31 when he comes out? how is that life?
Craig Mansfield, Newcastle, UK
Be careful what you wish for.
"It is high time that the Government got on with fixing this before it is too late."
This statement is scarier than the murder.
And I'm sure the government will be more than happy to grant your wish.
Gildea, Los Angeles, United States
It is ignorant and insulting to use these murderers as representatives for the 'children in this country'. What about prospective university students, potential officers and soldiers or those keen to join a respected profession? The children in this country are only influenced by older generations.
John, Hull,
when is somebody going to have the bottle and say "we have all had it wrong" mike is so right in what he says no discipline but just think how many jobs this crazy system has created, thousand upon thousand so I think it will never change mores the pity.
dave, stalybridge, england
It is too late.
C Achmed, Woodmansey, England
What on earth is happening to children in this Country ? The fact is they have no discipline, no father figures and some of the parents are either hooked on drugs or drink. It is high time that the Government got on with fixing this before it is too late.
